Carmen Lau, masters student at Victoria University Wellington, is sending out her postal survey on social attitudes to the options for decommissioning oil and gas platforms and infrastructure this week. Carmen is funded by our grant through the Sustainable Seas National Science Challenge, looking at social, environmental and economic risks, costs and benefits of decommissioning in the Taranaki Bight.
Participants in the survey were randomly selected from the electoral role, and will be asked a range of questions about their understanding of decommissioning. This helps us to investigate the underlying factors that contribute to social support or opposition for each option.
We’ll be following this up with a series of hui and focus groups in Taranaki over the next few months.
